The city above the gorge

Rimefold holds roughly 74,000 people in its continuous built-up area and about 110,000 in the wider capital district, including nearby settlements. Both estimates are subsets of Halvyr's population. The river runs from north to south through a gorge. The oldest west-bank terraces carry Crown House and the Winter Market; east-bank growth surrounds courts, teaching buildings and homes. Lower workshops approach the gorge where stable ground permits. The city does not stand on one flat shelf.

The two principal routes are Uplift Road on the west bank and Lantern Street on the east. Both run broadly north to south, bending with the terraces. Bell Bridge crosses in the northern half of the central city. Weavers' Bridge crosses farther south. Stair lanes shorten some journeys, but delivery vehicles and residents unable to use stairs follow graded streets. A short line on the plan may conceal a substantial climb.

Soot-darkened terraces and repair shops line both sides of a wintry river gorge, joined by bridges; market stalls and a public lift occupy the near bank.

Eight places on the plan

The numbered places locate public destinations rather than every building. The plan is schematic; bridges, banks and route order are meaningful, while drawn distances are not surveyed measurements.

A walk through the working city

Start at Crown House and follow Uplift Road south to the Winter Market. From its lower entrance, take the signed eastward approach to Bell Bridge. Cross to the east bank, then follow the court approach into Lamp Court. Lantern Street leads south from the square towards the School of Measures. Continue to the approach of Weavers' Bridge, cross west, and climb the short graded link to Rope Hall. Uplift Road connects the repair quarter back towards the market. This loop crosses the gorge twice; it never requires walking in the river channel.

Upper West has large older houses and crowded lodgings converted for visitors. Lower West smells of wet rope, machine oil and food sold to early shifts. East-bank student rooms can be cheap until heating charges are added. Lamp Court's covered edges attract people waiting for an advocate and people who simply need somewhere dry. The clinic's street connection matters as much as its position above the river: ambulances cannot make use of a picturesque staircase.

Water, warmth and access

Drinking water is drawn from protected upper catchments and treated before distribution. Wastewater follows separate service lines to treatment works downstream of the central city. The gorge is not an open drain. Buildings on older terraces sometimes share difficult pipe access, making repairs a negotiation between neighbours as well as a technical job. District heat serves much of the centre; outer streets use smaller systems.

Bridge crews clear designated pedestrian lanes before opening them fully after ice. Notices distinguish a closed vehicle deck from a complete crossing closure. Covered waiting points, public lifts on two steep service routes and handrails extend access, but equipment failure can still lengthen a disabled resident's journey. Goods sheds accept deliveries for high streets when weather interrupts the last climb. There is no interstellar departure terminal hidden behind the market's transport counter.

The third bell

Nava carried a repaired puppet from Rope Hall with its head wrapped separately. Her grandson had asked why the king could not keep it on. She had told him that audiences liked to recognise a performance they had paid for. At the market, she stopped to watch a stallholder pour hot fruit syrup over shaved ice. The combination offended everything she had been taught about winter. She bought one.

By the time she reached Bell Bridge, the syrup had stained her glove and the puppet's head was beginning to emerge from its cloth. A passing child stared. Nava lifted the wooden face towards the gorge, gave it the royal voice and ordered the river to turn round. The child laughed. Nava tucked the head away before the third bell, then continued towards her grandson's east-bank flat with the cold sweet melting against her teeth.

A capital assembled on difficult ground

Rimefold's terraces retain several periods of occupation. Crown House and the oldest market plots sit on the west bank; the growth of courts, teaching and specialist care strengthened the east. The Valley Settlement of SR 502 brought more delegates, petitioners and paid rooms. Landlords discovered that constitutional progress required somewhere to sleep and began pricing it accordingly.

The SR 661 grid failure is remembered through the duration of particular rooms' cold, not a single city-wide experience. Buildings with reliable reserves served neighbours who normally quarrelled over pipe access. Later heat-network repairs changed those relationships again. A shared valve beneath one household's floor can matter more to daily power than the royal standard visible from its window.

Lamp Court and the price of waiting

Lamp Court shelters advocates, petitioners and people who need neither profession but do need dry clothing. Court clerks maintain separate lists for filing, scheduled hearings and urgent applications. A place on one list is not a place on another. Paid agents make a living knowing the difference; the public advice counter exists because everybody else still needs to use the court.

Copyist Evara Tull rents a worktable beneath the covered edge. She reads documents aloud before accepting a copying fee and has lost profitable customers by explaining that a beautifully recopied refusal remains a refusal. Her husband works an early market shift. Their shared midday hour is more difficult to protect than either person's formal right to rest, particularly when a distant valley's petitioners arrive together.

Rope Hall's necessary tolerances

Cold-rated housings made at Rope Hall protect instruments from weather, vibration and careless handling. Regional metal arrives before imported seals and storage components with depressing regularity. Workers separate assembly waiting on parts from completed orders: covering an unfinished object with the customer's name does not make it ready to travel. Domestic repairs compete with exports for the same skilled hands.

Uplift Road carries deliveries towards the market and upper terraces. East-bank instrument work reaches the school through Lantern Street; Weavers' Bridge connects it to the repair quarter. Bell Bridge remains a northern crossing, not an industrial shortcut through a court. Lift outages and bridge restrictions lengthen journeys unequally. A wheelchair user and a carrier with a heavy crate may both require the graded route while needing entirely different assistance.

Air below the roofs

Cold still air can hold smoke over the lower terraces even when the upper sky is clear. Small stoves, auxiliary generators and workshop exhaust contribute in different proportions through the season. Public notices distinguish such local inversions from a general failure of the district heat network. Closing a window helps only if the rented room has another safe means of ventilation.

Maintenance crews look for felt-root fungus in damp service cavities and for ice concealed beneath thin thaw water. River spray makes certain exposed surfaces treacherous without turning the gorge into a convenient dump for city waste. Drainage and drinking-water systems remain separate. Meltwater Clinic's outreach nurses visit buildings whose occupants repeatedly return with the same cold-housing complaints; treatment cannot repair the roof that keeps sending them back.

Learning with something at stake

The School of Measures keeps broken housings, flawed optical pieces and repaired gauges in its teaching collection. Students learn which failures are visible and which demand comparison against a reliable reference. Paid workshop placements supplement classes, though rent can still force a promising student to work more hours than study allows. Public demonstrations give schoolchildren a way to handle instruments without pretending they are qualified to use them alone.

Psionic teachers rent quiet rooms away from heavy machinery. Their students must manage mental strain and obtain consent before involving another person's perceptions. Spell-treated components return to mechanical inspection after their working period. Guard and rescue crews practise evacuation across usable bridges and graded streets; Rimefold's defence includes keeping the clinic supplied, not turning every market entrance into a checkpoint.

Meals, puppets and the household after the hearing

Winter Market sells hot root cakes, preserved fish, sharp cheeses and fruit syrup kept for celebrations or a cold day requiring improvement. Bathhouse clubs arrange ring-carry fixtures and arguments about whose turn it is to mend the equipment. Hearth Witness rooms offer memorial meals, while secular households sometimes contribute ingredients without joining the recitation. Nobody has to explain their entire philosophy before peeling a sack of roots.

Nava's repaired royal puppet belongs to a flourishing small theatre trade. Performers buy replacement joints from repair workers and negotiate rooms among the same families who attend the shows. An audience can enjoy a king losing his head without desiring an actual execution. After the performance somebody must collect the dropped pieces, carry a sleepy child home and decide whether the remaining heat credit will last until morning.
